In Fall 2016, Seattle voted to fund ST3, a public transit project that would bring light rail to Ballard, West Seattle, Tacoma, Federal Way, Everett, Kirkland, and Issaquah.
A decade later…
Sound Transit is estimating a completion date of 2060 for Ballard Rail if nothing changes.
We’ve come together to help Sound Transit keep its original commitment of light rail to Ballard by 2035.
What Can We Do?
Call to Action: August 2026
Sign our Action Letter. Send it to at least 2 friends.
We have a lofty goal of getting 90,000 to 146,000 signatures representing the daily riders for Ballard Link Extension. We are calling for accountability from the Sound Transit board and demanding they:
- Open shuttles in 2026 between Ballard and the existing light rail network as a stopgap until our light rail station opens.
- Host a public forum in Ballard in September, 2026, to be attended by Sound Transit board members, CEO, and executive leaders, with opportunities for all community members to ask questions directly.
- Continue hosting public forums at a minimum of every 6 months.
- Release the promised Request For Information (RFI) by October 2026 to find better and faster ways to build to Market Street.
- Provide specific details on how your five proposed financial levers will get the Ballard date to 2042, and how Sound Transit will implement them.
- Move quickly to incorporate industry best practices, such as those outlined in the Transit Costs Project and Transit Abundance Playbook.

New to Save Ballard Rail?
Why This Matters
The Ballard link extension is projected to have 90,000 to 147,000 riders, the highest projected ridership of the ST3 plans.
This is the most important project in Seattle in decades, and the decision of whether to cancel it or continue is the most important decision we’ll make as a city this century. We cannot fail. Rail to Ballard has to be built.
Our Goals
- Build the full line and ALL the stations.
- It cannot come at the expense of other ST3 projects.
- Secure funding through better practices and new revenue.
- Build it quickly; failure is unacceptable.
